Weight
Management
Overweight
Being overweight is generally defined as exceeding the
recommended weight of one’s height and build.
Excessive body weight, though, is not as much of a problem
as excessive body fat. Excessive body fat is a health
problem because it can lead to a number of serious disorders,
including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood
pressure, and certain kinds of caner. Overeating, lack
of exercise, heredity, glandular malfunctions, diabetes,
hypoglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, emotional tension, and
boredom all can contribute to excess weight.
Weight loss is the most easily understood principle
of health. All that is necessary to loss weight is to
make sure that the calories consumed in food are fewer
than the calories spent on exercise and daily activities.
That is because excess calories, no matter what their
source, are turned into fat before being stored. Therefore,
simply eating less can allow one to lose weight and
keep it off for a few weeks or months. Maintaining weight
loss for a lifetime is, unfortunately, much more complicated.
Losing and regaining the same twenty pounds is a common
theme in many weight loss histories.
Regaining lost weight does not simply reflect a lack
of willpower. The body makes the hormones insulin and
leptin in proportion to the amount of stored body fat.
After a few weeks of dieting, the body stars making
less insulin and leptin. If the brain receives less
of these hormones, it activates appetite centers.
Compounding the difficulty are changes in the body’s
energy requirements after weight loss. Many diet experts
have speculated that the body learns to use food more
efficiently during diets. The idea is that dieting slows
down resting metabolism so that, for example, a 200-pound
person who could avoid gaining weight by eating 2,000
calories a day may need to eat considerably less than
1,800 daily calories after losing twenty pounds.
Contrary to this common belief, however, metabolism
does not have to “slow down” after weight
loss in most people, provided muscle mass is maintained
and the loss comes from fat. This means, though, that
long-term weight loss without exercise is nearly impossible,
and that strength-building exercise is needed in addition
to aerobic (heart-conditioning) exercise.

in regulating body weight, metabolism and reproductive
